Are you asking about where I got the information used in the site? If so, it comes from many different places and research.
Or are you asking about the lines (equator, meridian, etc)? That is also from a few places but you can also zoom in on google earth or maps to find it.

MapBake can be used to identify any combination of 40,684 places.
There are 256 top level ISO codes. Of these:
- 8 (3%) have no regions identified.
- 20 (8%) have only a single level of subdivision
- 228 (89%) have two levels of subdivision. Of these:
- 1 has map data for none of the second level subdivisions
- 42 have map data for some of the second level subdivisions
- 185 have map data for all the second level subdivisions
This link is a MapBake page that will generate a color coded kmz file showing those places
All the 256 top level codes, and the 3208 first level subdivisions have complete polygon map data.
Of all the map data in MapBake:
- 78% is polygon data
- 18% is point data (all for second level subdivisions)
- 4% the data is missing (all for second level subdivisions; and will be added when found)
There are 80 top level codes that have points for some or all of their second level subdivisions.
This link identifies the places that have some point data for the second level subdivisions

Swiss sub-codes and map data have been added.
The Swiss map data is derived from:
Source: Swiss Federal Office of Topography
Also some better LI region maps are now also from the Swiss data.

Backup has been enhanced so KML sets will be backed up.
MapBake codes will change soon. Maybe tomorrow August 18th, 2016.
So backup now.

Since sub-regions are now supported, the single quote character is being used in sub-region MapBake codes. This causes escaping the character and takes 3 bytes to send 1 character. I am going to recreate MapBake codes without that character. This will cause almost all MapBake code to change.
MapBake now has a Backup button that will copy a text representation (not MapBake codes) of the selected places. This text can be put in the code entry box and will create the new MapBake codes after they change.

Canada sub-codes have been added with map data adapted from Statistics Canada, gcd_000b11a_e.zip, 11/28/2011. This does not constitute an endorsement by Statistics Canada of this product.

A new version was released that allows for sub-regions to be identified.
Some countries have map data for these sub-regions, some do not. I also have possible sub-regions I can identify for about another 0 countries or so.
The Show function uses geochart which uses the regions for some countries and the sub-regions for others. MapBake will try to use both so whichever is used will work.

Since sub-codes have been added:
I have collected polygon data for all sub-codes except for the following:
Morocco (MA) - 63 sub-codes
Greece (GR) - 51 sub-codes
Bangladesh (BD) 64 sub-codes
Uganda (UG) - 112 sub-codes
Zambia (ZM) - 96 sub-codes
Lithuania (LT) - 66 sub-codes
Fiji (FJ) - 14 sub-codes
France (FR) - 1 sub-code Meuse (55) has incorrect map
United Kingdom (GB) - 1 sub-code London, City of (LND). The Wikipedia entry says it has a population of around 7000 so I am thinking this may be just a small part of London.
So, that is missing map data for 468 of 5858 places

The encodings for MapBake will change soon. These changes will reduce the need for future changes in encoding and will allow for additional levels of identification not possible with the current system.
If you have any questions, please ask.
UPDATE: Upcoming changes, expanding the number of places that can be specified, are in alpha test.
These changes will cause some MapBake codes to change. These will be with codes that haves regions specified within the following countries:
Azerbaijan (AZ) - had 78 regions now has 70 regions with 8 sub-codes in 1 region
Bosnia and Herzegovina (BA) - 13 regions now has 3 regions with 10 sub0codes in 1 region
Cape Verde (CV) - had 22 regions now has 2 regions with 22 sub-codes
Dominican Republic (DO) - had 32 regions now has 10 regions with 32 sub-codes
Equatorial Guinea (GQ) - had 7 regions now has 2 regions with 7 sub-codes
Greece (GR) - Greece had 13 regions now has 14 regions with 51 sub-codes
Guinea-Bissau (GW) - had 9 regions now has 4 regions with 8 sub-codes
Indonesia (ID) - had 33 regions now has 7 with 33 sub-codes
Ireland (IE) - had 26 regions now has 4 regions with 26 sub-codes
Marshall Islands (MH) - had 24 regions now has 2 regions with 24 sub-codes
Northern Mariana Islands (MP) - had 4 regions now has 2 regions with *15 sub-codes
Palestinian Territory (PS) - had 18 regions now has 2 regions with 16 sub-codes
Saint Kitts And Nevis (KN) - had 14 regions now has 2 regions with 14 sub-codes
If you have any of these MapBake codes, let me know and I can convert them during my testing.
